Arth DVD--HELP!!!!

So this post was originally supposed to be my review of the 1982 Shabana Azmi and Smita Patil starrer. I've been obsessed with these two women since I started reading about Indian cinema on the internet and in books, although I've yet to see a film with either of them in it. I'd been searching for Arth for about a year now, as I've heard countless praise about the story and the riveting performances.

Imagine my disappointment when, after finally purchasing my own copy from India Weekly, I popped in Arth after a long day at school, and...the DVD won't play! I've tried every DVD player in the entire house...even the top of the line one in the living room that will play just about anything...and I can't get past the opening credits! When I looked at the back of the DVD I didn't see any scratches, but some weird discoloration that looks like a result of a manufacturing error.

I sent an email to India Weekly asking for an exchange of the DVD...but they won't do that. Instead, they offered me a refund if I ship Arth back to them within 15 days (They say this is because when one DVD won't play, the entire batch usually won't play in my brand of DVD player). But I don't want my money back!!! I just want this film!!!

Please help a sister out! I really, really want to see this! Should I ship this back to India Weekly and repurchase from them all over again? Does anybody know of a reliable service that I can find this movie on? I suppose I could check Amazon, but since they go through third parties anyways, I figured I could eliminate the middle man and find something else online. Any recommendations or comments would be appreciated! Thank you sooo much!:)

Have you tried playing it on your computer? The only online vendor I use that seems to have it is NehaFlix.

Please help a sister out!

For love of film!!! ROTFL...

I'd go to an Indian area near where you live, and check out the Indian video stores there....MUCH better, cheaper, quicker than buying online. And you can go scream at them in person if the CD doesnt work.

I'm so sorry, Nida, that sounds really frustrating! I've heard bad things about India Weekly; LOTS of bad things. :-(

This is one of my biggest pet peeves about being a Hindi film fan. DVD manufacturers DO NOT check the quality of their master disks before burning a whole bunch and sending them out. I now fast forward through all the chapters before I settle in to watch so that I don't end up hooked on a story I can't finish!

And I would advise staying away from India Weekly too. Nehaflix is just the best, or an eBay seller (since they generally don't want bad feedback they come through)...

BTW, India Weekly IS right, probably if they did replace it the same thing would happen. Go for the refund, and try and find a copy by a different manufacturer. Don't know if that was clear from my previous comment, sorry!

Thank you all so much for the helpful hints!! Y'all made me feel better already!:)

Bollywood Fan-Ahh, yes, its all for the love of film. LOL...You know, that will be my next step. There's just something about having a hard copy in my collection, though. Plus I think this is going to be one I'll really like and want to watch again and again. But thank you for the info--I'll go here next if I can't find the DVD!I've been meaning to check out Nehaflix anyways!

Chevalier--LOL, you are so right about that!!Actually, I do have a favorite grocer that, er, rents me most of my films at a cheap price--and they're usually crystal clear. Problem is, they don't have Arth. Though your comment has got me thinking I should check the other Indian grocers--there's a handful of them in my city. Thanks!

Ajnabi--It is SOOO frustrating! I really wanted to see/review this one! I hadn't heard anything negative about India Weekly, but it seems you and Memsaab have so I'll probably steer clear from them after this!

Memsaab--Thank you for the helpful advice(Yay!! You're back! I'll have to stop at your blog!). I had no idea about India Weekly's bad rep, but I will probably never order from them again. Darn, I knew any place that sells DVDs for a penny HAD to be too good to be true! Yep, this is something I'm discovering is a constant frustration as a Hindi film fan...But I will definitely check out Nehaflix and Ebay!

Bummer Nida. And great idea from memsaab about scanning through the disc first to avoid the disappointment of skipping. And like theBollywoodFan said, trying the computer is a good idea, since I've found them more forgiving of skips than the DVD player. I recently bought a copy of Dil Deke Dekho from amazon and had the same problem. It was a new sealed disc (shemaroo) but it skipped a lot to the point where I thought it was a bootleg. Frustrating.

All the best,
Sita-ji

Nicki--You're so awesome!! Thank you so much! I just emailed you on FB!~:)

Sita-ji--Ooh, I think I misunderstood Bollywood Fan. That's a great idea. I just tried it and it didn't work, in this case, though. But will keep that in mind for next time. Shemaroo--there packaging always looks suspicious, doesn't it?

Bet if they (and India Weekly) knew we had Bollywood blogs and would voice our complaints to warn our readers they would have checked before they sent it! ha ha

There's a copy of Arth uploaded to YouTube, though it's unsubtitled.

Induna is my personal favorite service, and they have a subtitled DVD of Arth available: http://www.induna.com/1000001583-productdetails/

Of course, if you buy from Induna and you're outside of India, I highly recommend buying 10+ DVDs from them at a time to spread out shipping costs.

Try dvddhamaka for the sky version of the dvd if not i'd recommend {http://www.induna.com/1000001583-productdetails/] they ship to the US and it costs $11.49 plus 1.49 for each dvd,. They are based in india and have a huge selection plus really reasonable prices.

BB--Thanks for the link! I will look into Induna!

Anonymous--THank you for the suggestion--I'll look into this as well!

Thanks again for all of your help!
